  • Fruits of Rarotonga: A snorkeler’s dream near the southern coast

  • Tip: Bring reef-safe sunscreen and consider reef shoes for comfort.

  • Held every Saturday morning in Avarua, this lively market is full of fresh produce, crafts, souvenirs, food stalls, and live music.

  • Best for: Gifts, clothing, local food, and soaking up the vibe

  • Tip: Get there early for the best selection

Turtle Tours

  • (There are some tours that are not certified please enquire)

  • Swimming with sea turtles in Rarotonga is a must-do experience, offering unforgettable encounters with these graceful creatures in their natural habitat. Several tour operators provide guided snorkeling adventures tailored to various comfort and experience levels.

Cross-Island Trek (The Needle/Hospital Hill)

  • Hike through lush rainforest and across the island from north to south, passing dramatic scenery and climbing to Te Rua Manga (The Needle) — a volcanic rock pinnacle with panoramic views.

  • Guided or solo: Go with a guide like Pa's Treks or try it yourself (if experienced).

  • Duration: 3–4 hours

  • Tip: Wear good shoes, take water, and avoid hiking after heavy rain.

Quad Bike adventures

  • Quad Adventure, a thrilling experience that combines off-road excitement with cultural insights. Participants navigate through challenging terrains while learning about the island's history and environment.

Cycle the Coastal Road

  • The 32-kilometre circular road around the island is ideal for a leisurely bike ride. It’s mostly flat and passes through friendly villages, ocean views, local cafes, and roadside stalls.

  • Option: Take the quieter inland road (Ara Metua) for a more rural, scenic route.

  • Bike rentals: Available around Muri, Avarua, and Arorangi.

Explore by Scooter or Car

  • Rent a scooter or car and explore at your own pace. Stop at beaches, local cafés, roadside stalls, and scenic lookouts along the way.

  • Pro tip: Drive clockwise one day, and anti-clockwise the next — you’ll spot things you missed the first time!

Whale Watching (Seasonal)

  • From July to October, humpback whales can be seen migrating past Rarotonga. Watch from the shore, or book a boat trip for a closer look.

  • Best spots: North and west coast viewpoints

  • Bonus: Sunset + whale spouts = unforgettable

Discover the Local Culture

  • Dive deeper into Cook Islands heritage:

  • Highland Paradise: A cultural village with tours and stories of ancient traditions

  • Cook Islands Christian Church (CICC): Attend a Sunday service for beautiful singing and a warm welcome

  • Art & crafts: Visit galleries and shops for tivaevae (quilts), black pearls, and carvings

Relax & Rejuvenate

  • Don’t forget to slow down — it’s island time, after all.

  • Beach days: Find your own stretch of sand and just unwind

  • Massage & spas: Book a treatment at a resort or mobile spa

  • Sunset watching: The west coast (like Arorangi) offers the best views
