One of the best ways to experience the true heart of Rarotonga is by visiting its local markets. From fresh tropical produce and handmade crafts to sizzling street food and live island music, the markets offer a vibrant slice of Cook Islands culture.
Here’s your guide to the must-visit markets around the island:
Punanga Nui Market (Avarua)
Main Market – Saturday Morning (6am to 12pm)
The Punanga Nui Market is the biggest and most popular market on the island, and a must-do during your stay. Held every Saturday morning in the capital, Avarua, this market is bustling with locals and visitors alike.
What to find: Fresh fruits and vegetables, cooked meals, handmade crafts, clothing, island-style jewellery, souvenirs, flowers, and traditional art.
Entertainment: Live music and cultural performances often add to the lively, festive vibe.
Food: Don’t miss out on local treats like ika mata (raw fish salad), BBQ plates, coconut smoothies, and sweet banana poke (pudding).
Tip: Arrive early for the best selection, and bring cash – most stalls don’t accept cards.
Muri Night Market
Open several evenings a week (typically Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5pm)
Located in the popular Muri Beach area, this open-air night market is perfect for a relaxed evening meal under the stars.
What to expect: A casual food court-style setup with a rotating mix of food stalls offering local and international dishes.
Favourites: Fresh fish curries, grilled meats, crepes, tropical fruit desserts, and vegetarian options.
Atmosphere: Family-friendly and welcoming, with shared tables and a holiday buzz.
Tip: Arrive close to 5pm — food sells out quickly on busy nights!
Craft & Village Markets
Throughout the island, you’ll also find smaller village markets and roadside stalls that sell local produce, home baking, handmade pareus (sarongs), and more.
Where: Look for signs in villages like Titikaveka and Arorangi or simply pull over when you see a stall on the roadside.
Great for: Unique, locally made souvenirs and supporting local families directly.
Tip: Don’t be shy to chat with the vendors — they’re often happy to share stories or tips about the island.
Insider Tips for Market Visits
Cash is king: ATMs are available in Avarua, but it’s best to carry smaller bills when shopping.
Bring a reusable bag: Help reduce plastic waste by carrying your own bag or basket.
Try something new: The markets are the perfect place to sample island cuisine you won’t find in regular restaurants.
Ask questions: Vendors are usually happy to explain how something is made or grown — it’s part of the experience!
